There is no crystal ball needed. Your take is that what happened in the preseason mattered
the NFL in its entirety said you were wrong. He is not a backup this year, and the Vikings needed a backup. They did the right thing by cutting him and that is where you are 100% wrong.
What does your spreadsheet say about Bradford before we traded for him? Why didn't it tell you he would be a mediocre QB who would pad his stats with garbage time stats to be 16th in yards and 18th in TDs?
Who was 3 times as likely to throw a 3 yard pass on 3rd and 7 than a 7 yard pass?
Here's what Paul says about the past.
On 3rd down, passes that traveled exactly 3 or 7 yards downfield.
3yds 7yds
t.jackson 0 0
b.favre 0 1
c.ponder 1 1
t.bridgewater 1 2
s.bradford 0 1
c.keenum 1 1
k.cousins 0 0
2016 NFL 15 37
MYTH BUSTED!
Sam was above average. But lets broaden your theory to get a larger sample size. Lets look at all 3rd and 7 situations, and passes thrown short (<7 yards) or past the marker (>7 yards).
short past times more likely
t.jackson 3 6 0.50 x more likely
b.favre 6 17 0.35 x more likely
c.ponder 15 14 1.07 x more likely
t.bridgewater 9 12 0.75 x more likely
s.bradford 6 4 1.50 x more likely
c.keenum 5 5 1.00 x more likely
k.cousins 8 2 4.00 x more likely
2016 NFL 160 233 0.69 x more likely
Myth still busted.
How bout every 3rd down, short/past ratio?
short past times more likely
t.jackson 72 74 0.97 x more likely
b.favre 117 122 0.96 x more likely
c.ponder 166 136 1.22 x more likely
t.bridgewater 150 84 1.79 x more likely
s.bradford 99 58 1.71 x more likely
c.keenum 79 61 1.30 x more likely
k.cousins 84 60 1.40 x more likely
2016 NFL 2435 2266 1.07 x more likely
Myth busted again.
Every Vikings QB after Favre was worse than league average however. Common denominator? Initials MZ? Kyle Sloter in preseason 14/19 (0.74x) ruh-roh, anyone else see the problem? Teddy in preseason 18/7 (2.57x). Well that's why they kept Teddy over Sloter despite them putting up the same preseason stats. Sloter is just too aggressive for Zims play it safe philosophy. What was his quote about John Flipper? Oh right, "that's not how we win games around here". Throwing the ball past the sticks is clearly not the way Zim wants to win football games. Boom! Mystery solved. Thanks Paul. Gotta run those aggressive QB's out of town even though Paul proved it was the best strategy to win.
Who would lead the offense to be one of the worst in the NFL in 2016?
Points scored 327 (23rd) confirmed - kinda one of the worst
Total yards 5041 (28th) confirmed - one of the worst
passing yards 3836 (18th) busted - mediocre
rushing yards 1205 (32nd) double confirmed - the absolute worst
See that wasn't so hard. It's called evidence, which is difficult to argue against. I don't know why we would hold Sam responsible for the historically abysmal run game however. 1177 teams have played a 16 game schedule in NFL history and the 2016 Vikings put up the 13th fewest rush yards of them all, and the 15 worst yards per carry at 3.17. Do you suppose that might have had an affect on the passing game? I mean if a D doesn't have to worry too much about your McKinnon/Asiata run attack, it can focus a bit more on the passing.
It should have, since it took his best season as a pro to even accomplish mediocrity.
However his best season had nothing to do with the argument. The argument was Bradford was the best option available, and you're not allowed to use your crystal ball to draft Mahomes lol. Why didn't you draft Trubisky in your fantasy scenario? Also you're partially wrong because Bradford went on to have his best season with the Vikings that year. 71.6% completions, 3877 yards, 20 TD's, 5 INT's. But you will notice how these numbers align with Zimmers play it safe philosophy and our abysmal OL. High completion percentage, few mistakes, low TD production.
It is almost like you pick and choose what you want to see in your little spreadsheet.
I will have to remember to not attempt any hyperbole with this one.
Bradford was garbage on 3rd and long. He completed the highest percentage of passes of any QB on 3rd and 7+ in 2016, and converted the 4th lowest of any QB in the NFL. How does that happen if he isn't throwing a lot of passes on 3rd and long that have no shot at a 1st?
He was mediocre for us, and played on a team without a run game to compensate for that mediocrity. Hence the bad offense. Pretty simple.
Zimmer has arguably gotten the best statistical season out of every QB he has coached. I say arguably because Cousins had a higher passer rating in 2015, but not as many TDs or yards. In 2016 had the lower passer rating but had more yards and fewer TDs. With Case and Bradford though, it was by quite a bit better. Seems like he does a decent job with his QBs, no?
Yes he was a below average QB before he got here and no, the argument isn't whether or not he was the best QB available in 2016. Almost every season the best QB available via free agency or via trade is not a good option at starter. Why? Because good starters almost never become available. Trading a 1st for a below average starter is a bad move, it was then, it is now, it will always be. That is why the Colts didn't waste a 1st on Tannehill or Case Keenum or whatever other below average starter was available. That is why no team in a similar situation has ever done what the Vikings did. Because it was a stupid, stupid move, that you still defend.
And back to the topic at hand, you keep believing that using your own subjective view of Sloter in preseason is more important than the objective fact that not a single NFL exec thought it mattered enough to give him a backup spot.
