The Vikings took two more players on Day 2 of the 2019 NFL Draft. Let's take a look at their profiles:
TE Irv Smith Jr.
Charlie Campbell's Scouting Report:
My notes on Smith Jr: He's a smaller TE at 6'2" 242 lbs, so while he doesn't have the size of other TEs, his speed should allow him to get open. He had good hands (6.4% drop rate in senior year) and was one of the most effective TEs in college football (had the #1 yards per route run at 2.56). He is a good downfield receiver, catching 55.6% of deep passes coming his way. Smith Jr. has work to do in the blocking game, as he had below average numbers there.
I really like this pick; TEs develop notoriously slow in the NFL and rarely contribute in their rookie years. They're also few and far in between. I like Smith Jr's chances of breaking out as a starting TE in 2020 with Rudolph moving on at that point. Grade: A-
And then Spielman pulled some serious shenanigans in the 3rd round, bothering the heck out of us rubes by trading down twice, moving up, and then trolling us by moving down again. Eventually, with the final pick in the 3rd round, Spielman would draft:
HB Alexander Mattison
Charlie Campbell's profile:
My notes: Mattison was not on my HB rankings or my 151 man Draft Board, so I'm going to be a little harsher on this pick. Mattison was a high volume HB at Boise but had middling efficiency. His elusive rating was average and his running ability is about average for the draft class. He ran a poor '40 (4.60) but measured well in other tests and is in the 63rd percentile due to pSPARQ. Mattison has a great yards after contact stat, meaning he can power through tackles for extra yards. He was a below average receiver at Boise State, but depending on how they used him, the Vikings could unlock some potential in the receiving game. He was a poor pass protector.
I won't be as harsh on Spielman since he moved down 3 times before making this pick, but there were a lot of players I liked better here, and they went with a 5th round caliber HB at the end of the 3rd round. Grade: D
What are your thoughts on these picks? Will the Vikings start taking defensive players tomorrow? What are they going to do with 9 extra picks tomorrow?!

Smith was excellent in 2018 as a mismatch weapon for Alabama. He is a shifty route-runner with quickness down the seam, good hands, and the size to be dangerous after the catch. He seems to have one speed and is not on the bigger side of tight ends, hence he is not a top-20-caliber specimen. In 2018, Smith caught 44 passes for 710 yards and seven touchdowns. He has upside to grow as he gains more playing experience.

Charlie Campbell's profile:
Mattison was a workhorse for Boise State in 2018, toting the ball 302 times for 1,415 yards - 4.7 average - and 17 touchdowns. He also showed some nice receiving ability with 27 receptions for 173 yards. As a sophomore, Mattison averaged 5.1 yards per carry for 1,086 yards with 12 touchdowns. He had 28 catches for 284 yards and a score that season.
