Using data from Pro Football Reference and working in Tableau, I put together this history of the draft. Here are a few fun things I learned:
The first overall pick in the first NFL Draft was Jay Berwanger. He signed with the Eagles and was quickly acquired by the Bears. He declined to play for the Bears and instead chose to work at a rubber factory and become a part time coach.
In 1974, the Steelers drafted four future Hall of Famers.
Four of the top five picks in 1989 made the Hall of Fame.
Of the 240 Hall of Famers drafted since 1936, half were drafted within the first 20 picks.
Overall picks #1 and #6 have produced the most Hall of Famers, with 13 each.
Picks 188 through 193 in the 1990 Draft included five players who never played a regular season snap. The sixth was Shannon Sharpe.
The rate of drafted players actually playing in games improves every time the draft is shortened. However, even since 1994, when the draft went down to 7 rounds, you can see an increase. Does the spread of the internet mean teams have access to better info and tape, making them more likely to draft successfully?
What sticks out to you?
