Mike Zimmer finally got a quarterback. He then promptly missed the playoffs. The Vikings were a curious 2018 tale. Despite turning Case Keenum into Kirk Cousins, they scored 22 fewer points than in 2017. That, coupled with allowing 89 more on defense dropped a 13-3 club to 8-7-1. Zimmer’s squad dominated non-playoff teams to the tune of 7-1-1 but were helpless against those who made the tournament, going 1-6. They were the definition of average. Part of Zimmer’s diagnosis was that he strayed too far from his roots. Desperate and disgusted, he pink slipped pass-happy OC John DeFilippo on December 11. Following the firing were wins over the hapless Dolphins and Lions before a season-ending suffocation against the Bears. Even with those inconclusive results, Zimmer removed fill-in OC Kevin Stefanski’s interim tag, making his 2019 intentions clear. More runs, fewer missed blocks, more big plays on defense. He is doubling down on Zimmer Ball as the rest of the league loads up on “Next McVays.” One of the NFL’s most focused, disciplined coaches, Zimmer’s track record suggests 2019 will not be another season of poor game plans and botched execution.

Since the 2000 season, the Minnesota Vikings have had a total of five different head coaches. The Vikings’ current head coach, Mike Zimmer, has already had a longer tenure with the team (entering his sixth year) than three of the previous four guys to have the job.

Before Minnesota decided to hire Zimmer in 2014, the team spoke with a number of potential candidates. Some of these people who were also being considered for the job even ended up landing a head coaching job with another NFL team.

So prior to the Vikings officially making Zimmer their head coach, who were some of the other guys that the team was thinking about for the job?

Todd Bowles – Believed to be one of the favorites to get the job with Minnesota. Bowles was the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals at the time.

He ended up getting hired to be the head coach of the New York Jets in 2015. But Bowles was recently fired by the Jets after the team posted a 24-40 record with him leading the way.

Dan Quinn – Along with Zimmer and Bowles, Quinn was also reportedly a finalist for the Vikings’ head coaching vacancy in 2014. However, he was unable to get a second interview with Minnesota due to his commitment as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, who were in the middle of their playoff run to the Super Bowl.

Quinn was eventually hired to be the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons in 2015. Currently entering his fifth season with the Falcons, the team has a 36-28 record and one Super Bowl appearance since he became the head guy in charge.

Greg Roman – At the time of his interview with the Vikings in 2014, he was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Since then he has spent time as an assistant with both the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.

Jim Tomsula – Before he was hired to be the head coach of the 49ers in 2015, Tomsula interviewed for the Minnesota vacancy in 2014. His tenure as an NFL head coach lasted for just one season after San Francisco only won five games with him in the lead.

Darrell Bevell – A former assistant with the Vikings, Bevell was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks at the time of his interview with Minnesota. He went on to spend another four years running the Seahawks’ offense before the team fired him in 2018.

Ray Horton – After a season as the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator, Horton was brought in to interview for the Vikings’ head coaching job. He is currently the defensive backs coach for the Washington Redskins.

Minnesota was also rumored to be interested in a few more candidates, but these seven guys (including Zimmer) were the only ones whose interviews with Minnesota were confirmed.

It seems safe to say that the Vikings made the right call in hiring Zimmer. The only other candidate who might have been able to last until now would be Quinn.

I remember the list and kept expecting them to hire another dud. My top 2 were Zim and Quinn. I was leaning more toward Quinn because of the direction the NFL was headed (offense). Zim built some solid D's so I thought that would be an interesting albeit backward direction IMO. So I think they finally found a good quality coach that knows what he's doing, but I'm still not sure if defense was the right direction. The Vikings will never 100% please me, but at least they didn't hire another Frazier or Childress which I think all the other guys on the list would have been.

Bowles was a complete disaster with the Jets, going 24-40. Tomsula went 5-11 with the 49ers in 2015, although he beat Teddy 20-3 in his first game before getting blown out 43-18 and 47-7 in his next 2 games. It's like when the Buccaneers were giving up 5 TD's per half in 2014 until they played Teddy and held him to 1 TD through 3 quarters xD. The job savers!! Ray Horton hasn't done anything noteworthy as a D coordinator. Greg Roman hasn't done anything at all, and Bevell has been declining since the Hawks won their Super Bowl.

Well son of a beatch, then who was I think of or why did I think he was an offensive guru lol? I was definitely leaning toward someone offensive minded and it wasn't any of those other guys on the list. Zimmer wasn't my first choice, but I thought he was the best defensive minded guy available.

Zimmer is the man for 2019. Beyond if he earns it. That is the reality of it. Didn't Childress sign a 4 or 5 year extension that Farve earned him? That didn't stop ownership from moving on.
Not a lame duck is all it meant. Really though. They are all lame ducks if that time comes.

If being a Viking fan was easy ~ everyone would do it.
