I get what you're saying but I think one of the reasons you see that aggressiveness late in the game from a team like Denver is because they have Manning running their offense. He has a level of experience and accomplishment that makes it easy for a coach to trust him not to make "the big mistake" late in a tight game (not that he hasn't made a few over the years). It's a lot riskier to be that aggressive late in a tight game when you have a QB whose TD/INT ratio is 1:1 or worse (much less with a porous o-line capable of giving up a sack/fumble at any moment).
I still think the main reason the Vikings are what they are is because they don't have the right personnel (from top to bottom) to be much more.
Ha. It's funny that you say that about having a one-score lead, because originally I had (or less than) in there, but I erased it. Winning by a score, winning by less than a score, or being behind, to me, the Vikings are rarely aggressive enough.
I understand the injuries and personnel issues, but I don't care. There comes a time when there is nothing to lose, so you just go out there and give it your all, and see what the frick comes of it. Look at the Browns last year against us. Or look at the Rams against the Seahawks this year. Do you mean to tell me that they have/had so much better talent than we have/had on offense? Or special teams? I would disagree. They had injuries and shortcomings, too. But as I said, they began playing like there was nothing to lose, taking big risks. It isn't always going to work, but sometimes it does, and why not try it? We need to quit playing so cautiously. It gets us nowhere. Haven't we learned that by now...? Where has it gotten us...? I can name just as many losses that it has gotten us as I can wins. That's not a recipe for success.
Sitting on a small lead and trusting our defense to win the game for us is foolish, especially last year. Points, points, points, and more points! Please! And discussing Manning, I think it has more to do with just plain being aggressive and going for the kill as opposed to, "Well, it's Manning...we can trust him." I was speaking of Manning and his passion. The coaching staff was as cool as a cucumber. They weren't the ones freaking out; Manning was. That's what I mean. I love that attitude. He's more whiney, but I love Rivers, too. Everyone needs to be responsible and trying to do what they can in that individual drive; forget the next drive. Manning wanted more points to not have to leave it up to the defense (even though there was just a tiny, tiny chance the Chargers could win anyway). That's what I'm saying. I wish our coaching staff would be more aggressive, and especially at this point. We aren't fighting for the playoffs or anything, so go out there and see what the guys can do. If it works, great, if not, at least you tried. There is this saying, "If you don't ask, the answer is always no." Well, I feel that way about not playing aggressively. I'd rather lose a game playing aggressively and taking some big risks here and there, than losing and wondering, "Well, what if?"
...preferably, though, I'd rather just win decisively. And, usually, that happens with being aggressive...not sitting back just, "hoping and wishing."
