OK... so we may as well have some talking points here, and I don't feel like doing much work today. Cap wise, we aren't in great shape. I guess guaranteeing 84M to a QB tends to suck up all that free cap space. Might have been better trading Barr and a 1st for Mack and locking him up... but that ship has sailed.
I guess the flip side is that the free agent list doesn't look too promising... not with Teddy occupying a spot in the top 25... though to be fair, that was before yesterday, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's not on it at all. It's also worth noting, no guards... so it looks like draft and/or trade for that one... yuck. It does, however, look as though we may be able to add to the defense via FA...
What do we need?
OL... and lots of it. I personally want two new guards or a C (if Elf can switch to guard), and a 3rd tackle that can be used interchangeably with Reiff and O'Neil. Honestly, 3 OL with the first 3 picks would be smart.
LB... I guess a lot depends on where Barr ends up if he should stay here or not. He's a disrupture when he's good, but he's also part of the problem with those long runs and can be taken advantage of in mismatch situations against receivers and TEs. I woudln't mind him back, the question at least to me is the cost.
DT... Richardson may stick around, or he's gone. I personally like the idea of a DT that can be so disruptive as to get sacks, but there's no Aaron Donald on the market (and he woudln't be cheap), and I doubt one can found in the draft, especially for 2019 with a later round pick.
WR... We may have that with Beebe and Zylstra. Though I'd try hard to see of Fitzgerald would be willing to do a 1 year and retire in Minnesota, but if not, I'm happy leaving Robinson here.
K... I'm open to resigning Bailey. He isn't the problem on this team.
Coaching... yeah, we need some changes here. I'm not a coaching expert, so I'm not quite sure who to bring in. I do know who to can (I'm looking at you Preifer). I'm not 100% sure Edwards should stick around... It would be nice to have a DC that Zimmer can rely on, but clearly Zimmer is still running the defense, and he needs to be more engaged with the offense. We need a fantastic OL coach and I'd want to go out and get a great QB coach. I'd probably send KC to a psychologist that specializes in reducing OCD... but that's a separate issue for Mr. Spreadsheet.
Soo.... what am I going to do to the team:
Cut - Sendejo (5.5M), Remmers (4M after deadcap), Treadwell (I'm eating 3M dead cap here). Total increase in cap is about 10M.
Restructure: Rudolph (not ready to cut him just yet, and I think Conklin can be the guy, but I'm definitely dropping that 7M hit), Reiff (this may not work), Griffen (yeah, I'm still pissed about Buffalo, and no team is going to touch a free agent mental case and give him anything close to what he's getting now). I'm going to guess there's another 5M in savings there.
Resign - Bailey, Harris, Wile, Robinson, and Easton. I like Easton as the 3rd guard. He can start as well, but given his health of late, I wouldn't count on him. Most of these guys should be cheap. Harris might cost something, but he doesn't have a long resume which is going to keep his contract value down. Bottom line, is I suspect most of these guys will be cheap per se and we should have some room.
Trade - So this is the kicker in my opinion. We're flush at CB... Rhodes, Waynes, Hughes, Hill, and Alexander have all played pretty well. I like the depth there, but we need help elsewhere. Rhodes and Waynes are very expensive too. I'm dangling Rhodes. I don't think he's going to necessarily get a great return. He's expensive, for one, which means we likely take someone expensive back in return (and I'm fine with that if said player is a difference maker at OL or DT), but he's also losing a step and while he'll be productive, I think his best seasons are behind him. If we get lucky, some team will be enamored enough by his past to pay a lot for him, but I'm not holding my breath. I do think we could get a 2/3 type pick for him or a good player with similar contract issues/performance, which would be a pretty massive upgrade in play at OL in particular. I'd also test the market on Waynes. He might get a better return since he's younger and can be locked up by the trading team. I'm not sure what the right answer is, but I think of those two should be traded this offseason for help elsewhere.
In all, I think this leaves us enough cap space to go out and get a big LB or DT type, maybe both if we're creative, but that is going to affect the future team. I'm not 100% sure I want Barr back, mainly because I think I'd rather get a disruptive force at DT and stack my LBs with guys that can cover and make tackles. I don't mind the creative LB blitzes, but this team gave up too many long runs and had trouble covering guys in the middle of the field. I'd rather get a DT that can notch more sacks. Maybe Richardson is that guy, though perhaps there are better options with Clowney, Jarret, or Suh. I'll trust the coaches there, but if I'm spending cash, that might be where to spend it as FA OL help doesn't look promising.
Draft:
I know we should be getting a comp pick... though we lose one for Cousins, and we didn't get one for Bradford due to a stupid league rule. For some reason I thought we had a net of 1 high comp pick, but I could be wrong. I think I'm drafting OL with 3 of my first 4 picks and looking at defensive help later in the draft. I wouldn't mind picking up a high ceiling DT/DE project, a LB in the late rounds, maybe a TE, and probably another CB. Any in draft trades are to position and grab picks of need or upgrade a pick next year. None of this draft 12 7th rounder crap.
Thoughts?
