First, this post is aimed at much as the Cory Cove's and Phil Mackey's and Judd Zulgad's of the world who host the numerous Viking's Whine Line shows that now populate the Twin Cities as it is anyone on this board, but, I am sure it applies to some on this board, and if you desire to assail my belief, go ahead. I welcome vigorous debate.
I was amongst those NOT doing somersaults after Bridgewater's debut against the Saints, I was amongst those who BEGAN doing somersaults after the Falcon's game. However, the last two games have been awful, almost as bad as anything I saw during three years of Christian Ponder. Yes, I am aware the offensive line is awful, but not every one of the THIRTEEN SACKS(13?!?!) the past two game is on the OL entirely. See, you can't have it both ways. It can't all be PONDER'S FAULT against Green Bay, and all the OFFENSIVE LINE'S FAULT against Detroit and Buffalo.
Bridgewater holds the ball for an eternity way too often. And not all of those plays result in sacks either. There were several plays today where the OL gave him 5+ seconds to throw...and I don't believe one of those plays resulted in Bridgewater doing anymore with that time than throwing the ball away. Now, one of the reason's for that is obviously that the receivers aren't doing there jobs downfield (could it be the same scenario transpired against Green Bay?), yet Bridgewater showed no desire today to even try to make something happen with his feet, except on one play that ended in an interception. If, you have 5 seconds to throw, and nobody gets open, tuck the ball down and run, get two, three, ten yards! You have that capability.
But, it's all part of the double standard with Bridgewater/Ponder. Ponder tucked and ran too much, so Bridgewater is just being tough and standing in the pocket, not passing up the opportunity to make something out of nothing. If a ball Ponder throws is tipped and intercepted? Christian Ponder needs to be tarred and feathered. If a ball Teddy Bridgewater throws is tipped and picked? Well, the ball was tipped, it isn't Teddy's fault.
The one defining difference is that Ponder is in his fourth season, and Bridgewater is a rookie, and I'll grant that point. However, fans of this team have hated Christian Ponder pretty much since the second he was drafted, as if he somehow blackmailed Spielman into drafting him 12th overall. Or, that it was Ponder himself who rated him the 4th best QB in that draft (and that was the consensus, not universal, but generally accepted). Christian Ponder is a disappointment, I really wanted him to turn out and he didn't. But, Teddy Bridgewater has had one great came, and one average game and two awful games. Awful. 38-63-345yrds-1td-5ints and a 47.4 passer rating. Sacked 13 times, 4 carries for 18 yards and a fumble the Vikings recovered. More than that, the most indefensible stat? 19 points. In case you're wondering, there has been no two game span in Ponder's career (in which he has played the entire game) in which the Vikings of not scored more than 19 points, the low was 24. Teddy Bridgewater was supposed to be the most NFL ready QB in the 2014 draft. Does that phrase, "most NFL ready QB" ring a bell? And, since when are rookies prohibited from being productive NFL QBs? At least to the point where you score more than 9.5 points per game? Ponder never got any better. Will Bridgewater? Did Ponder have more to work with, really? Yes, he had Adrian Peterson and Percy Harvin, but I doubt anyone would make the argument that the 2011-13 OL was significantly worse than the 2014 version...especially since most of the component parts are the same. Bridgewater has Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jerrick McKinnon looks like a player, too.
Is it possible that Teddy Bridgewater will turn this around? Yes, but I haven't seen any more out of him than I did Ponder his first few starts. I am not very optimistic at this point unfortunately. I feel that the 2011-? Minnesota Vikings will be seen as the "Tedrian Pondwater Era", and it won't be viewed fondly.
I've been wrong before, I've been right before. I am hoping for the former.
