Football Outsiders’ Quarterback Pressure Analysis Shows How Amazing Deshaun Watson’s Rookie Season Really Was by Matt Weston

Last season the Texans had a pressure rate of 36.9%, which was last in the NFL. Watson was pressured on 41.9% of his dropbacks, the highest rate in the league. The average pressure rate last season was 31.6%. When DW4 was under pressure, he had a great DVOA of -36.0%, which ranked 10th. This isn’t the really special part. This is the amazing part: Without pressure, Watson had a DVOA of 99.3%, the best in the entire league.

This isn’t my work. Here is what Scott Kacsmar had to say about Deshaun Watson:

Another young quarterback who entertained us last season was Deshaun Watson in Houston. His rookie season was sadly cut short by a torn ACL, but Watson’s 99.3% DVOA without pressure is the highest season by any quarterback since 2010. His pressure rate (41.9 percent) was also the highest in our database, so if the Texans can protect him better so that he plays a full season in 2018, then the potential is sky-high. Watson is likely a quarterback who will hold the ball longer to make big plays and wrack up some pressure on his own, but with that kind of DVOA when he was kept clean, this should be one of the most anticipated sophomore seasons in NFL history.

Before the Patrick Mahomes era ever officially begins in Kansas City, the former No. 10 overall pick is already drawing comparisons to one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

Former Chiefs Pro Bowler Tamba Hali recently made headlines when he compared the second-year quarterback to Hall of Famer Brett Favre, per Good Morning Football (via NFL.com's Herbie Teope): "You're going to get a complete player. I don't want to hype him, but I compare him to Brett Favre. He runs around the field and he throws the ball and he's just having fun."

Apparently, he's not the only one in Kansas City who feels that way.

One Chiefs staffer told NFL.com's Bucky Brooks that head coach Andy Reid also sees a little bit of Favre in the 6'3", 230-pound Mahomes:

"[Reid] absolutely believed Mahomes had some Favre in his game. We constantly heard the comparisons, especially his ability to improvise and extend plays. He raved about his gunslinger mentality and big arm, and how he could fit the ball into tight windows. Reid wasn't bothered at all by the crazy throws that Mahomes would make into traffic. All of it reminded him of Favre."

I've got my popcorn ready for the inevitable Brady vs. Belicheat drama...

I also want to see if all of LA's offseason trades turn out to be brilliant or if it blows up in their face.

This year will be a good indicator if Trubisky is a good QB or if he's a bust.

Speaking of LA, I saw an article yesterday predicting the Rams weren't going to be that good this year. Here's a few excerpts:

Everyone seems focused on what the Rams obtained this offseason, yet barely anyone is paying attention to what they lost. There were two primary reasons why Jared Goff improved tremendously from 2016 to 2017, and the first would be his coaching staff. New head coach Sean McVay did a great job of assembling a stellar staff, which included quarterbacks guru Greg Olson and offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur. Both were very instrumental in Goff's development, particularly Olson, who was responsible for Marc Bulger's best season ever and Josh Freeman's Pro Bowl appearance. Quarterbacks have struggled after being separated from Olson - Freeman was quickly run out of the league - and Goff could follow this pattern now that Olson and LaFleur are coordinating the Raiders and Titans, respectively.

It's no surprise that Los Angeles has been a horrible home-field advantage for the Rams. When the team played in Los Angeles previously, Steve Young would actually have to tell his teammates to be quiet in the huddle, since the stadium was so silent that the opposing team could hear what they were saying. It's no surprise the Rams were 3-5 at home last year while being 7-1 on the road.

Expectations are sky high for the Rams. This is a dangerous thing, as this Los Angeles group has no history of success in the playoffs. There have been many instances of teams with no experience failing to meet great expectations, whether it was the 2017 Raiders or the "Dream Team" Philadelphia Eagles from 2011. Many of the key players the Rams acquired were cast-offs from other organizations, so if those teams didn't want them, why would they suddenly all succeed all together? The Rams are suddenly one of the prohibitive favorites to win the Super Bowl, but there's a good chance they'll disappoint.

“I think they’ve made a lot of the moves I wanted to make,” McAdoo said Thursday morning.

As free agency gave way to the NFL draft and a new and improved roster was assembled, McAdoo assessed what was handed to new coach Pat Shurmur and came away with a strong feeling as to what is next for the Giants.

“I think they’re gonna win the division,” McAdoo told The Post, his first public comments since he was fired, along with general manager Jerry Reese, Dec. 4, with four games remaining in the season — the first time in 41 years the Giants dismissed a head coach in-season.

It’s not the blind side, it’s in his vision, so if he’s comfortable with what’s going on over on the left side, it can help him move in the pocket a little bit better.”

What, you think the Chiefs will win the division instead? I think they're going to be very good with Mahomes - he's got Hunt, Kelce, Hill, Watkins, and an average O-line. The Chiefs should be a good team.

I agree, I think the Jags are going to be mediocre (8-8/9-7) this season. Though I'm not sure what to think about the Texans cause their O-line is total trash and I'm not sure if Watson's knee is going to hold up through a full season.

As I'm working on some stuff tonight, I put NFL Network on in the background. Is it normal that just listening to Al and Cris talk gets me excited? lol. They're replaying the playoff game between Philadelphia and Atlanta.

Serious question: Is there anything better than Sunday afternoons in fall/winter watching football all day long? If there is, I don't know of it.

I agree, but usually free agency, the draft, and lots of Madden gives me patience over the offseason. It wouldn't be worth it if we didn't have to wait a little bit... but I do miss those Sundays made up of just watching NFL redzone.

I forgot how close the Eagles were to losing to Atlanta. Less than two minutes to go, and Atlanta had a 1st and goal.

Has there been a more disappointing team than Atlanta over the past handful of years? Hot starts where they crash and burn, getting bounced out of the playoffs when they had no business losing, that SB choke job, etc.
