The Vikings had a whole bunch of picks between the 4th and 7th rounds and they'll also be scooping up a crop of UDFAs, so let's take a look at what they've been to do.
4-2 DE Jalyn Holmes
- Talented but didn't put up the stats. Very strong, might play 3DT, but not a great pass rusher
.
Charlie Campbell's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 3-5.
It isn't easy to get snaps and playing time on the Ohio State defensive line because it is so loaded with future NFL talent. Holmes fell into that issue in 2017 as defensive ends Nick Bosa, Sam Hubbard, and Tyquan Lewis played more than he did. However, Holmes did well enough on a rotational basis to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl, where he had a solid week of practice.
Holmes totaled 29 tackles with two sacks, one forced fumble and three passes batted in 2017. He also had two sacks in 2016. Holmes has good size and speed. His best football is ahead of him, and he could end up being a much better pro than college player.
5-20 TE Tyler Conklin
- Good run blocker, decent hands, but after a nasty injury in college, his speed seems to be sapped.
Charlie Campbell's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 6-FA.
Conklin was a steady contributor as a receiver over the past two seasons. He hauled in 35 receptions for 504 yards and five touchdowns in 2017 after posting 42 catches for 560 yards and six scores as a junior. Conklin had a decent week at the Senior Bowl.
5-30 K Daniel Carlson
- The draft class's best kicker, he has a powerful leg and hits touchbacks with no problems, though his accuracy wasn't great in 2017
after a fantastic 2016 season.
Charlie Campbell's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 4-6.
Carlson was 23-of-31 in 2017. Two misses came in the 40s, two were in the 50s, and one was in the 30-yard range. He was 4-of-8 in the 50-yard range with a long of 54, where he was good from twice. Carlson has a shot at being a mid-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
6-39 G Colby Gossett
- Has the size and power, but needs development time.
Charlie Campbell's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 4-6.
Gossett started 46 straight games for Appalachian State. As a senior, he didn't allow a sack and had three penalties all year. Over the past two seasons, Gossett was a power right guard. He will need development to handle speedy interior rushers in the NFL.
6-44 DE Ade Aruna
- Had a huge combine and has the measurables, but he didn't stuff the stat sheet.
CC's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 4-6.
2018: Aruna put together 25 tackles with three tackles for a loss and three sacks in 2017.
2017: Scouts going to fall camps during the preseason told me that Aruna is a sleeper prospect who could end up being a steal. Aruna is said to run the 40-yard dash in the 4.65-4.75-second range, which is very fast for a defensive end. He is only in his fifth year of organized football, however, and is considered to be super raw.
7-7 LB Devante Downs
- Suffered a season-ending knee injury, but prior to that, he was a solid run stopper and leader of the Cal defense.
Draft Analyst's Scouting Report: Explosive and athletic linebacker whose progress was halted by injury last season. Breaks down well, displays excellent range and covers a lot of area. Instinctive, plays heads-up football and effectively makes the defensive calls. Fierce, chases the action hard and quickly gets to the flanks in pursuit. Physical and works hard to make plays. Aggressive and looks to finish off opponents. Strong open-field tackler.
Inefficient and does not always take proper angles to the action. Never had great production.
Downs is a hard-charging linebacker with underrated athleticism and above-average instincts. He offers possibilities in a variety of schemes but must stay healthy and produce over the long haul.
Currently known UDFAs - (Talent level)
S Tray Matthews
- 5th-7th round talent - Matthews totaled 59 tackles with two passes broken up and one interception in 2017. As a junior, he had 76 tackles with three breakups and an interception. Matthews was a solid defender for Auburn and has a skill set to work with for the NFL. His strong play earned him an invitation to the Senior Bowl, and he had some good moments in practice in Mobile. Matthews was very physical, showing the speed and strength to be a forceful hitter. He did not participate in the combine.
WR Jake Wieneke
- 5th-7th round talent - probably too slow for an NFL WR (4.67 '40), might be relagated to a redzone weapon with his 6' 4" size after catching 16 TDs in 2017.
OLB Garret Dooley
- 4th-6th round talent - Had a good senior year for Wisconsin and has the size to play MLB in the 4-3 defense.
WR Jeff Badet
- Typical UDFA
WR Korey Robertson
- CC's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 3-5.
Robertson broke out in 2017 with 76 catches for 1,106 yards and 12 touchdowns. It was a huge increase over his sophomore year, when he had 37 catches for 437 yards and three touchdowns. Robertson has nice hands with a thick build, but separating from NFL receivers could be an issue (4.56 '40).
DE Hercules Mata'afa
- CC's Scouting Report: Projected Round: 4-6.
Off-the-field issues are hurting Mata'afa, as teams have concerns about his behavior, including drinking and fighting. Adding that to him learning a new position in the NFL, and Mata'afa could slide in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Mata'afa played defensive tackle for the Cougars, but he will have to move to defensive end or outside linebacker in the NFL. Mata'afa does have a nose for the quarterback with pass-rush ability. In 2017, he totaled 43 tackles with 21.5 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Mata'afa had 47 tackles with 13.5 tackles for a loss and five sacks in 2016. He notched seven sacks in 2015. Mata'afa could get consideration for a DPR - designated pass-rusher - role in the NFL.
CB Holton Hill
- CC's CR: Projected Round: 3-5.
Hill was having a quality junior season for the Longhorns with some quality games against the good receivers on Texas' schedule. However with three games remaining, Hill was suspended by the Longhorns coaching staff. In 2017, he totaled 51 tackles with two interceptions and six passes broken up. Hill ran well in the 40-yard dash at the combine, but he showed tightness in the field drills. He is a big press-man corner who can struggle with speed, and that was given proof with his performance against Maryland's D.J. Moore in Week 1 of 2017.
TE Tyler Hoppes
- Typical UDFA
HB Kamryn Pettway
- 6th-UDFA - Bad 40 time, was suspended, and lost starting job to Kerryon Johnson. Should have waited until 2018 to commit.
HB Mike Boone
- Typical UDFA
-Summary-
This year's draft class was a bit of a snoozer, I'll admit. Hughes and O'Neill are solid projects at CB and T, and if they pan out, the draft class will be a great one, especially for having the 30th slot in the draft. I wasn't a fan of the Conklin or Carlson picks, and a few of my favorites were snagged by other teams. Reading up on Colby Gossett, I'm actually liking him more than I thought. Finding him at the end of the 6th round was a great value.
However, the Vikings UDFA class looks like dynamite this year. Holton Hill as a UDFA? Yes, please! He was the 79th player on my board, ranked as a 3rd-4th round pick. Hercules Mata'afa was 119th on my board as a 5th rounder, so I love that pickup too. Apparently Korey Robertson is a decent prospect too. Dooley and Matthews are reasonable Day 3 prospects.
Alright, that's enough from me! What do you guys think?
